In 1996, an immigrant couple from the Ivory Coast unlocked the doors at 129 West Main Street with one goal in mind: to provide. They opened the doors to provide for their young family and to provide natural hair braiding services to a community lacking a salon home that could cater to their needs. Founded on this principle, K&D African Hair Braiding has served as a cornerstone for natural styling and braiding on Long Island for more than 25 years.
We have embraced our clients from across the Island and our neighboring city dwellers with the love and care one can find at the hearth. Entire family trees spanning generations from grandmas and mommies to sisters and aunties (and of course, our fathers and brothers too!) have embarked on their natural hair journey with us and have brought their young along to join in this natural revolution. K&D is family owned and operated with a diverse, extended West African team, who love sharing their native hairstyling techniques for a uniquely integrated experience.
K&D’s evolution has been succeeded by Kandee, their daughter, who has introduced a more youthful and intuitive atmosphere for new and existing clients. Our mission has always been to provide a service that clients feel has met their hair care desires. And now, that mission is being enhanced to also provide educated advice for long-term hair care and overall wellness. Because we are a family business, we pride ourselves in our ability to grow with our clients and strengthen our family ties.
A FAMILY STORY—The Kamate family originates from the Ivory Coast and comprises six adult children.
